For my first year here at Central Michigan University, I have had the pleasure of working for America Counts and Reads. America Counts & Reads is a federally funded tutoring program administered by the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center at CMU. The program focuses on improving children's reading skills, math skills, and confidence and encouraging children to become life-long learners. Not only do we tutor these students, but we also provide support, friendship, encouragement, and mentorship. By doing more than just teaching them, we set them up for a successful future. This has been a great opportunity for me to grow my connections with others. I typically see the same one or two students every week which allows me to really get to know them. Additionally, I can then connect their interests to their reading. This job has also allowed me to improve in leadership, responsibility, and promptness. My favorite part about this job is seeing the students improve throughout the semester.
